How many questions are on the Canadian citizenship test?
The real IRCC citizenship test has 20 questions. Our practice test also uses 20 questions, drawn so every topic from Discover Canada is represented.
What is the passing score?
You need at least 15 out of 20 correct — 75% — to pass, on both the real test and our practice test.
How long is the test?
45 minutes. Our practice test uses the same 45-minute limit and submits automatically at zero, just like the real exam.
Is this the official IRCC test?
No. This is an independent, unofficial practice tool, not affiliated with IRCC or the Government of Canada. It won't be identical to the real test.
What should I study?
The official IRCC study guide is Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Our eight topics above follow its chapters — study those, then use the practice test to check your recall.
What happens if I fail the citizenship test?
You get up to 3 attempts within a 30-day window. If you don't pass in 3 tries, IRCC invites you to a hearing with a citizenship official instead. See our guide to how the online test works for the full process.
Do I need to memorize exact dates?
Focus on understanding the big picture — a handful of key dates (Confederation in 1867, for example) do come up, but most questions test whether you understand what happened and why, not exact figures.
What age do I need to be to take the knowledge test?
It's required for applicants 18 to 54. If you're 55 or older, you're exempt from the knowledge test, though you still need to show adequate knowledge of English or French.
Can I take the real citizenship test in French?
Yes. The knowledge test is available in both of Canada's official languages — choose whichever you're more comfortable with.
How many practice tests can I take on this site?
One mock test is free. A one-time $12 CAD unlock gives you unlimited timed practice tests, plus full review of every question you've missed.

L'entrevue de citoyenneté
Alongside the written test, an officer will speak with you to confirm your application and check that you can communicate in English or French. These are the kinds of questions that come up — flip each card for what a strong answer should cover.
